Five simple steps of cloud migration

Five simple steps of cloud migration

What makes a Cloud migration successful and how did others approach this process?

Cloud migration is a hot topic. So how does one complete this journey smoothly? Based on experiences of Atos and Google clients, we have identified five simple steps to outline a successful Cloud migration: assessment, pilot, moving data, moving applications and optimization of services.

1. Assessment

Start with an assessment. Before any document is moved, it is crucial to know what applications you have and whether they are suitable for the Cloud. In general, applications fall into one of three categories: easy to move, hard to move or impossible to move.

To sort the applications, use this list of evaluations. As can be seen below, things to consider when putting an application in a box are their criticality, secretive data & timing.

2. Pilot

The next step is a pilot. Try to migrate a few apps to see how it works and discover best practices. Ask yourself critical questions regarding the migration. Is data being handled securely? What are similarities and differences between different design patterns and applications of the Google Cloud Platform? Track down possible hitches and solve them before continuing with the rest of the migration.

3. Moving Data

The third step is moving your data. Make sure your data is organized before you move it to the cloud. This ensures a smoother and more successful migration process later on. Before moving your data, consider which storage options you are going to use. Also, how are you going to transfer your data? Below you will find a short overview of possible storage and transferal options:

4. Moving Applications

The fourth step is moving your applications. There are quite a few possibilities when moving your application. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages. Look closely at what suits best. It is recommended to keep it simple to get your apps up and running as quickly as possible.

5. Optimization

Last, but definitely not least, is optimization. When your data and applications are successfully migrated to the cloud, it is time for improvement. Things like availability, elasticity and several monitoring services can be added to the cloud. This way, more can be done with your data and applications.
